For my PSA I have chosen to promote pleasure reading with a target audience of not only 4th and 5th graders but also to parents. This PSA is aimed at encouraging children to actively read beyond school required assignments. For the hashtag I’m thinking #WinnersRead #ReadForYou or #ReadTodayWinTomorrow.

With a 9 year old who enjoys reading as much as he does Fortnite I believe it is important that children should spend an equal amount of time exposed to things that will benefit them down the road and will promote practices that will carry them long into their lives. This by no means is an anti gaming PSA because there is value to gaming but I believe that there should be balance with it favoring the arts and sciences more.

My initial storyboard ideas are to use my 9 year old for the video and still photos. I will use voiceover with him as it will be easier for him to read the lines as opposed to act them. I will use video and stills of him at the WVU library and a local library, either at his school or the public. The use of national and statewide statistics regarding literacy rates and success rates of children who read more will help to support this cause.

The social issue this will be aimed at is illiteracy in America. I feel that children who read more will grown into adults who are well rounded, critical thinkers who can use their creative side to better themselves and their communities. Society as a whole would benefit from better educated and well rounded children. Parents can benefit by having children who are interested in more than one thing and can also share in the experience of the written word with their child.

Endless Opportunities

  1. I really enjoyed this approach that is less abrasive then most that are similar to it. I also really loved your reasonings for combating illiteracy in America, I feel as if many people don’t add critical thinking into this issue, thus don’t grasp exactly how vital that is to children learning/in the education system who may be unsuccessful without the ability to read and grow.

I’m really excited to see how you story-board your PSA!

  2. I think this is a wonderful idea! I grew up in Tennessee where students were highly encouraged to read. I moved to WV when I was in third grade, and no one read anymore. It’s a habit that I’ve kept because it was formed so young, and I believe I’ve benefited from it. I also like that you’ve pointed out it doesn’t have to be only gaming or only reading; children should have a balance of both.

  3. As someone with multiple degrees in English, I certainly consider myself an advocate for reading and agree with basically everything you’ve said. There’s also plenty of room in the world for another PSA that encourages children to read more. But I’d also like you to think about a new way into the topic. That is, consider how you can frame this subject in a way we haven’t really heard much before. There might be something to the idea of balancing your time, that is, not denigrating video games but rather advocating for a little of both (or more reading). You could even make the case that reading is more of an adventure than gaming.
